Wine and Health: Is Wine Good for You?

We must clearly understand that wine is not good for our health.

It is a food like many others, which is neither good nor harmful if consumed in the right quantities. Which for wine, are very small!

Wine should be considered a food to be enjoyed in moderation, that is, 200-350 ml per day depending on gender and body weight (obviously a 50 kg woman can afford a daily quantity of wine close to 200 ml, while an 80 kg man can drink much more, approaching 350 ml). We are talking about 1/3 or even half a bottle, therefore a quantity that, if concentrated in a single meal, easily allows you to fully enjoy one, or even two different wines.

An excellent way to consume wine is that of the passionate connoisseur, who is not satisfied with a glass of low-quality wine, but is curious and attentive and seeks out higher-quality wines. Or that of the occasional drinker. The consumers most at risk are those who get used to drinking wine with every meal, considering it a beverage on a par with water. In these cases, increasing the quantities until exceeding the doses that do not involve risk is very easy. Let's not forget that our culture called for drinking wine in a reckless way: wine consumption in Italy in 1966 was 110 liters per capita, while today it does not reach 50! That way of considering wine must be forgotten, and we must make room for a different type of consumption.

As Prof. Calabrese, president of ONAV (National Association of Wine Tasters), says: “You drink water and you taste wine”.

One last thing:
Those who love wine and want to get into the world of tasting will have to learn to taste wine and spit it out, like the professionals do. Only in this way will it be possible to taste 20-30 or more wines during, for example, a fair or an event dedicated to wine. Spitting out wine after tasting it is not easy at first, but with a little practice it can become second nature, and a very useful weapon to avoid excesses during occasions in which you can taste dozens of wines but, by necessity, it would not be possible to drink a sip of all the wines without overdoing it.
